What to do if Central Portfolio Control contacts you

  1. Don't confirm or pay on the first call. Ask for the company's mailing address and the original creditor's name.
  2. Request validation in writing within 30 days. Under the FDCPA, the collector has to pause collection until it sends proof. Use our debt validation letter.
  3. Check your credit reports. Get free reports at annualcreditreport.com and compare the balance, dates and original creditor.
  4. Dispute anything inaccurate. If the debt isn't yours, the amount is wrong, or it's too old to report, dispute it with each bureau. See how to remove collections from your credit report.
  5. Know your rights. Collectors can't call before 8am or after 9pm, harass you, threaten actions they can't take, or discuss your debt with most third parties. You can report violations to the CFPB and your state attorney general.

Questions about Central Portfolio Control

Is Central Portfolio Control a legitimate debt collector?

Central Portfolio Control appears in the CFPB complaint database with 1,140 debt collection complaints from October 2022 to September 2025. Collectors have to follow the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Before paying anything, ask for a validation notice and confirm the debt and the amount are yours.

Why is Central Portfolio Control calling me?

Usually because a creditor sold or assigned an unpaid account to them. It can also be a mistake: the wrong person, a debt you already paid, or a debt past the statute of limitations. Within 30 days of their first contact, you can request validation in writing. The most common complaint consumers file about them is "Attempts to collect debt not owed".

Can a Central Portfolio Control collection be removed from my credit report?

If the account is inaccurate, isn't yours, or can't be verified, you can dispute it with the credit bureaus and the collector, and it has to be corrected or deleted. An accurate collection can stay on your report for up to 7 years from the original delinquency date. Paid medical collections and medical collections under $500 are no longer reported by the 3 bureaus.

How do I stop Central Portfolio Control from calling?

Send a written request asking them to stop contacting you. Under the FDCPA they must stop, except to confirm they're ending contact or to notify you of a specific action like a lawsuit. Stopping contact doesn't erase the debt.
